Review
The Weary does fish on Wednesday and Fridays and they actually weren't swamped when we rolled in around 5:30. The fish is cod and it comes smothered in a relatively thick beer batter. The batter has a decadent flavor and its girth keeps the fish underneath slick. I thought it was rich and really hearty for a 2-piece but the kid didn't care for it at all. He gravitated towards the shoestring style fries which were expertly crisped and delicious.
The tartar was clearly house made and delightfully tangy. It took the fish up a notch for sure. The coarsely-chopped slaw was also house made and fresh, but a bit of a bear to get on the fork...tasty though. Capping things off was a superb little slice of toasted rye. It was perfect.
The Weary has always been a great spot and since it was so close to the venue it made sense tonight. Overall, this Fish Fry is pretty good and great addition to a Willy St. scene that doesn't have all that many Fish Fry options in general. The Bad Breath Burger is also still one of the best in town.
The 2-piece cod runs $15, which is about right in this day and age. The chunks of cod are nice and flaky and that flake is offset by a crispy beer batter. It's aided by a slick tartar that does its job admirably.
Some of the Weary's garlic chips come along for the ride and are exactly what you've come to know, but the slaw is something completely unexpected. This purple cabbage masterpiece is unlike anything I've had before - incredibly fresh, tangy, and highlighted by a hint of cilantro. Truly memorable. A slab of toasted rye was mentioned by the waiter but didn't manifest itself on the plate.
The @weary_traveler608 has always had great food and the Fish Fry makes a wonderful addition to the menu. Overall, this one is easily recommendable and we will be back for sure (probably on a Wednesday next time).
