In all honesty, after a big lunch I wasn't ready to tackle this bad boy on my own. Since I wasn't starving, and he was amenable to it, I decided to share it with the little man, which turned out to be a smart decision. We went halfsies on it and each enjoyed just enough of the decadent beer battered cod to fill us up. The fish itself was supremely flaky, but a little grease leaked from the large loin and softened up the batter a bit. He actually prefers it softer like this so he was all about it...I still thought it was decent.
The fries were expertly fried which resulted in a super crispy shell surrounding the pillowy inners. They were so good in fact, we ordered an additional side when the first batch ran dry and junior was still hungry. A big and bold tartar was nothing less than superb and took the fish to the next level.
The side of slaw was fresh and tangy, and the full slice of marble made my heart smile. Super sides for sure.
I feel like the Good Company has settled into their groove and are consistent putting out good food and great drinks. Overall, we recommend this Fish Fry and are thankful that when we need something quick and easy on a Friday we can just bop right down the road. And yes, the BOGO from the Mad City Cocktails book is a nice bonus! We managed to make the short trip down Mineral Point Rd and were one of the first tables of the night at @goodco.pp. I had an #OldFashioned in no time and this pretty plate of #bluegill not long after.
The Good Co. bluegill is beer battered, but lightly so. A lot of beer batters will bury fish this delicate, but you can still taste these fillets to some extent since the batter is thoughtfully applied. It has a great flavor to boot and pairs perfectly with the Company tartar.
The fries are ultra-crunchy and super satisfying, the fat slab of rye keeps it real, and the homemade slaw tastes like no other slaw out there...really yummy stuff.
I really wanted to get out there tonight, but driving to the sticks (or even the east side for that matter) just wasn't in the cards. Luckily for me, Good Company at Pioneer Point is right down the road and consistently delivers the goods. Overall, this one's easy to recommend and I'm still tickled pink they're practically my neighbor.
Normally I'm not a huge fan of beer batter on bluegill, but this one really works. It's delightfully crisp, with a tremendous flavor profile that's highlighted by a sort of smoky creaminess. It's hard to explain what makes it so good, but, man it's really good.
The skin-on fries are pretty basic, but done right, The tartar looks to be homemade, compliments the fish well, and is thick and delicious. Rounding it all out is the slaw, which is fresh and clearly homemade. The only bogey is the glaring lack of bread but this was a pretty good round nonetheless.
