Comment: There are a lot of great Fish Frys out there but every once in a while something truly remarkable comes along. Maybe it’s fresh fish, a perfect potato, or an exceptional overall experience that does it, but sometimes the stars align. That’s what happened to us at @rydersroadhouse outside of Rapids.

I knew Ryder’s takes their Fish Frys seriously so my expectations were pretty high going in, thanks in no small part to their numerous fish options and a plethora of sides to choose from. Honestly, I struggled, but eventually settled on the $21 walleye with a side of fries.

The Roadhouse was busy, but not jam packed, and our fish came about 10 minutes after we ordered - just enough time to slug down a stiff Old Fashioned. At first sight I could tell this was going to be good. The walleye was a single sizable fillet with an insanely crunchy, fried chicken-like breading. What’s more, the lord of the lake was generously seasoned before the breading was applied as evidenced by a yellowish twinge on the meat - some curry (or the like), and a whole host of other goodies are definitely in play here. It was flat-out delicious and easily some of the best walleye I’ve ever had...not even kidding.

Looking back, I’d select a different side (probably the homemade chips and dip), but the crinkle cut fries were absolutely sufficient. The tartar was a bold and beautiful blend as was the punchy homemade slaw. Finishing it all off was a fat slab of marble rye that added that little bit of nuance only rye can.

Maybe it was the phenomenal fish, the stupendous sides, or the fact I got to enjoy it all at my leisure with my wonderful wife by my side, but whatever the case may be, this was one for the ages. Overall, we highly recommend this Fish Fry and can’t wait to get rowdy at the Roadhouse again. And truth be told, I never would have known about Ryder’s if not for the @potosibrewingco #CaveAleFishFry contest so I guess I have them to thank for the insight.
