We found ourselves surfing north this past Friday on our way to a hockey tournament and since I knew we’d be near Eau Claire around noon I set the guiding light of our GPS for Phill’s Bar & Grill in Chetek.
We strode into the 2nd Street stop around 11:30 and had a cold one and a Fish Fry faster than you could say plot twist. I was feeling young and restless this morning and went whole hog with the 3-piece cod and a side of garlic Parmesan fries. All my children got the fish as well (all one of him that is), but he stuck to 2-piece and standard house-cut fries.
Phill’s regulars cared not that a minor was in their midst and language not fit for daytime TV flowed freely. It was colorful to say the least, and our son learned a little bit about “them Barron women” in the few minutes before the fish was fried. It was hilarious and now he’s educated.
The leading man found his mark and was clearly ready for his closeup. This cod was pure and flaky and denser than a love triangle plot line. It was kissed by a leathery beer batter that held it tight but let its emotions run wild. Its world was turned ever further by a bottle of bold and tangy tartar that was there for the embrace.
The garlic Parmesan fries were a bold and beautiful, but the dichotomy of flavors made me a little over emotional. I actually preferred the girl-next-door variety I swiped from the kid’s tray and would swing that way next time around.
The slaw was generally good - certainly nothing that would land you in the hospital, and if there’s only one life to live you might as well have a side of cornbread with your fish instead of a boring old dinner roll. Phill’s is saucy like that. ;)
It goes without saying that the (Fri)days of our lives are the best days and its places like Phill’s that make those episodes ever more (melo)dramatic.
