Comment: The $20 perch dinner from the ICU Bar & Grill was the perfect way to start our Memorial Day weekend.
There are plenty of options between Madison and the Northwoods, but after a little research I settled on the ICU based on the distance from home, the options available, and the reputation. There are a ton of fish available on Fridays, but as soon as I saw “butterflies” in the perch’s description I was sold. Based on that word alone I knew it would be the real deal and I almost always go for yellow perch when I know it’s legit.
For $20 there were three butterflies which amounted to six fat fillets. Each was kissed with a light breading that let the sweet flavor of the fish shine through. It paired exquisitely with the super-thick and zesty tartar…truly a match made in heaven and well worth the price IMO.
A boatload of crispy cross-cut fries made a veritable mattress for the flaky fish to rest its weary fins. A large cup of finely-diced slaw had a great taste with welcome horseradish pop while grandma’s basic dinner roll did the deed.
In all honesty I’m not sure the holiday weekend could have started off any better. Lunch was exactly what I was hoping for and then some (even though we didn’t pull a single winner on our $20 worth of pull tabs).
