Comment: $14 for a 5-piece lake perch is almost unheard of in this day and age. If you’re going to find a deal like that anywhere it’s probably at the local VFW, and that’s exactly where we came across it.

The Fish Fry at the VF is a no-nonsense affair and our baskets hit the table just a few minutes after we ordered them. At first glance I could tell this was the real perch the waitress alluded to. The fillets were small and home to a light batter, as advertised. While there was a subtle fishy flavor present, it wasn’t overt or off-putting. It worked pretty well with the Sysco standard tartar and I had no problem putting it all away in mere minutes.

The tots on the side were pretty basic, but next time around I’d definitely go for the fries. The slaw was also your standard food service variety that has a good consistency and mellow horseradish highlight.

1318 also has cod for $12 and after sampling both I’d lean that way next time. The cod is cut into small nuggets-sized bites, and shares the same breading as the perch, but has a richer (almost buttery) flavor. I snagged a couple from the kid and they made for easy munching. $12 cod and fries all the way next time.

You have to love a VF Double Ya. It’s always straightforward and you always get your moneys worth. While there are a couple better local VFW Fish Frys in my opinion, this one is nothing to scoff at. Overall, we recommend this Fish Fry and think it’s a great deal, especially when paired with the BOGO from the Mad City Cocktails book!
