Comment: I was thinking something fancy for dinner, but a team outing in downtown Eau Claire changed our plans so I rolled with the punches…and you know what? I’m glad I did. I finally got to visit the legendary Wigwam Tavern and sample what I’ve heard is the best Fish Fry in the city!

The first thing we saw when we walked into the Wig was a dude in a Ray Finkle jersey…which was immediately one-upped by a guy in a Mr. Plow jacket…amazing start. Other than those stately individuals (and a slew of other folks at the bar) the place was pretty empty (which gave me pause). I had a couple good friends with and wanted to make sure they had the full MFF experience…the “made from scratch” tagline on the menu assured it would be the real deal.

The fish at the tiny tavern was definitely made from scratch and while it wasn’t fancy you wouldn’t really want it to be. The beer batter had a great consistency, was nearly grease-free, and perfectly offset the flaky meat. It was really easy to eat and paired nicely with the thick and zippy gigantic cup of tartar sauce.

A smattering of crinkle-cut fries played their part and a big old cup of seriously creamy slaw took things over the top. The only failing was the lack of bread, but it was probably forgivable in this case.

While the Wigman is a tiny little tavern this is a pretty big Fish Fry for a nice little price. Overall, this one is easily recommendable and maybe even highly so. Way to go Wigwam! Glad we finally made it.
